First celebrated in Amarillo, Texas on March 5, 1934, the first Mother-in-Law Day was initiated and promoted by Amarillo’s local newspaper editor. The holiday, which was modeled after Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, has not yet been made official, meaning it is not recognized by the United States Federal Government. Despite being an unofficial holiday, Mother-in-Law Day has taken hold across the nation and is now celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of October.

Mothers-in-law have unfortunately been given a bad reputation in popular culture, often being placed in the punch line of mean-spirited jokes. Most people, however, enjoy a loving relationship with their mothers-in-law, offering mutual support and friendship. Mother-in-Law Day provides all daughters and sons-in-law an opportunity to break the cultural stereotype and show their mothers-in-law how much they are appreciated and loved.
